Catastrophe caustic · envelopes of straight chords
Nothing here is curved. Each line is perfectly straight, joining point k on a circle to point k·m. Where neighbouring lines almost touch, light piles up and the eye reads a bright curve — the envelope. This is exactly the caustic you see on the bottom of a coffee cup, in a swimming pool, and around a gravitational lens.
