Resonance curves · transmissibility |G(r)|
ζ = 0.100 · Q = 5.0 · r = 1.00 · |G| = 5.10
Shake the support of a spring-mounted mass and ask how much of that motion reaches the mass. Below its natural frequency it follows one-to-one; near r = 1 it amplifies by roughly the quality factor Q = 1/(2ζ); above r = √2 it is isolated and the response falls away. Every vibration mount, car suspension, seismometer and building damper is designed by sliding the operating point along this curve.
