Phase transition · SOLID
Atoms in a solid sit in a lattice and vibrate with amplitude A ∝ √T. Above the melting point the vibration exceeds the bond spacing: atoms slide past each other and the material flows. Above the boiling point the kinetic energy beats the binding energy completely and the atoms fly free as a gas.
