Each new seed is placed one fixed angle further round than the last. If that angle is a simple fraction of a turn the seeds fall into a few straight spokes and waste space; if it is the golden angle they never repeat and fill the disk evenly. Sunflower heads, pine cones and the leaves of most plants use exactly this rule to give every element maximum light and room.
