Chladni plate · 1556 Hz · n=6 m=3
A metal plate is driven at one pure tone. Everywhere the plate moves, grains of sand are thrown off; along the lines that stay perfectly still — the nodal lines — nothing throws them away, so the sand collects there and the invisible standing wave becomes a drawing. The number of spokes n and rings m is fixed by the driving frequency: change the tone and the picture snaps to a different geometry.
