Moire interference · two rotated gratings
Two regular grids laid over each other only agree periodically. Where their lines coincide the surface stays bright, where they fall between each other it goes dark — the slow beat pattern is the difference of the two spatial frequencies. Rotate one grid by a fraction of a degree and the fringe spacing explodes, which is exactly how engineers measure strain, alignment and surface deformation to sub-micrometre precision.
